Pope Announces Resignation

For the first time in nearly 600 years, a sitting Pope of the Roman Catholic Church has announced his intention to retire.

Pope Benedict XVI will retire effective February 28 of this year. The last Pope to do so was Gregory XII, who resigned from office in 1415, seventy-seven years before Columbus set sail to discover America.
