The Abundance: Narrative Essays Old and NewThe Abundance: Narrative Essays Old and New by Annie Dillard

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a collection of excerpts from a number of Dillard's books. It's a fun read from the enigmatic Dillard. If you are not familiar with her work, it's like reading prose poetry composed by an author whose one eyebrow is always raised to tip you off to her tongue in cheek. Yet she remains sympathetic as well as passionate about life, especially nature.

The Gardener's SonThe Gardener's Son by Cormac McCarthy

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I'm a Cormac McCarthy fan and enjoy reading about his hardscrabble characters. Hard living, barely literate, fatalistic. Life's hard and likely to become harder.

Pay attention: this book is not a novel, it's a screen play. First written in 1975 but published much later.
